EYEAMU: I am You
Service Projects

In 2021, we first arrived at Lake Atitlán to become permanent residents of this magical volcanic Mayan portal of beauty. After being here for a short time, the awareness of poverty among the indigenous Mayan population around the lake became a reality, and we felt called to help. Through a collaborative painting created with Joshua Telos during the local solstice and New Years events of 2021–2022, a piece of art was born and later sold. As we celebrated this wonderful accomplishment, we decided to pledge 20% of original artwork sales to devotional, selfless service. Through collaborations with many artists in the community and heartfelt donations, the projects described below were born. We find that community service catalyzed through creative acts brings immense joy and enriches the souls of everyone involved in the exchange. We are deeply grateful to be part of such a beautiful and vibrant community on Lake Atitlán.

Past Projects On Lake Atitlán

  • Tzununa Shoe Project

Poverty in the community has left many children without shoes. We donated 160 pairs of shoes to children in need throughout Tzununa. We visited each home to measure shoe sizes and learn about preferred styles.

  • Pila Sink Station

With an original painting sale, we donated 20 sink washing stations to families most in need, providing daily support for cleaning dishes and laundry while helping to reduce lake contamination by offering an alternative to washing clothes in the river. This initiative not only improves hygiene and living conditions but also contributes to the health of the local environment.

  • New Home For Felix's Family

With the support of our painting sales, we completed a full home renovation project for a Mayan indigenous family. Over a four-month period, we replaced the roof, doubled the size of the cinder block house, and added new windows and doors. This renovation has significantly improved the family's living conditions, providing them with more space, better protection from the elements, and increased natural light and ventilation.

  • Eco Stove Project

We donated 20 gas stoves to 20 Mayan families, each stove accompanied by a whole chicken to celebrate their new kitchen setups. Traditionally, most families rely on harvesting wood for cooking, which contributes to deforestation. The gas burners offer a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative, helping to preserve local forests.

  • Local Mayan Leaders

Building strong connections with local leaders is crucial to support families in need around the Lake. We helped cover the cost of Domingo’s mom’s emergency surgery, so she could get the care she needed without worrying about money.

  • Community Events

EYEAMU events bring together art, music, and community to drive social change and raise funds through creative expression.

Sevamaya is a spiritual center committed to seva: devotional service dedicated to helping those most in need. EYEAMU is pleased to collaborate with and donate to this cause. Sevamaya works to serve the people of San Pablo, currently the poorest village in the Lake Atitlán basin. Togther we organized a Christmas party on the grounds of Sevamaya, where we welcomed 23 families need. Each child received wrapped gifts and each family received a bag of food. Among those in attendance were children, mothers, and grandmothers.

In addition, Sevamaya maintains a weekly commitment to serve meals to homeless and disadvantaged people in the center of San Marcos. With $65 we can feed approximately 40 people weekly. EYEAMU is receiving donations so these projects can continue, strengthen the community, and remain in devotional service. It is an honor to work alongside Sevamaya in this effort of support and solidarity with the Maya community of the region. If you wish to support, we appreciate any contribution to maintain and expand these initiatives.
